Sleepyhead Beds is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in 2010 by past executive director and current board member Monica Starr. Monica saw first-hand the significant need for beds for the Kansas City metro area children while working with foster youth families. With two part-time employees, a truck and some warehouse space, Sleepyhead Beds was born and during its first year provided 1,200 beds to Kansas City area children. Sleepyhead Beds has grown to include an executive director and 10 volunteer board members. In 2015, over 2,000 children and parents received bed and over 150 tons of waste was diverted from landfills.
Sleepyhead Beds improves the quality of life for children and their families by providing clean, recycled beds and bedding. And we contribute to the health and environment of our community by sanitizing beds and keeping them out of landfills.
What we do
Since 2010, Sleepyhead Beds has delivered over 5000 donated, gently used, and recycled beds to Kansas City metro area children in need of a comfortable place to sleep. That has given Kansas City children over 3 million restful nights of sleep! These beds are recycled and delivered free of charge to families in need. We are the only organization in the Kansas City who is focused solely on this mission.
How it works
We ask for gently-used beds, bedding or donations from the generous people of the Kansas City metro area. When a bed is donated, with the help of our amazing volunteers, we pick it up and take it to our facility to be sanitized. Only then does it get our Kid-Worthy seal of approval. Then it’s ready to be delivered to the family’s home and placed in the child’s room. The process is as simple as that! We don’t require any formal applications; all we ask is that the donated beds are in good condition. That means beds with stains and/or odors will not be accepted.
