What Types of Beds Do You Accept?
We accept gently used twin, twin XL, full, full XL and queen box springs and mattresses. We also accept crib mattresses and pack-n-plays. We DO NOT accept king sized mattresses, futons, or mattress toppers.
Why Don’t You Take King Beds?
Our typical client is requesting a twin or full-sized bed. We have opted to carry queen sizes too because there are so many of them out in the community. King sized beds are too difficult for us to pick up and they require much more storage space. As a result, we never accept king sized beds.
What Qualifies as a Gently Used Bed?
We are looking for beds that are in good condition, clean with minimal (if any) staining and no tears or broken pieces. This video provides examples of what we do and do not accept.
What if My Bed Does Not Qualify as Gently Used?
If your bed does not meet our recycling condition requirements, we will not pick it up. If you are interested in recycling the bed to keep it out of our landfill, please contact Avenue of Life. They will gladly pick up and recycle your bed for a fee per piece. If you are simply looking to dispose of it, please contact waste management for your city (keywords are typically solid waste or bulky item pickup). Fees for these services vary by municipality.
How Long Does It Take for You to Schedule Pickup of my Donated Bed?
Sleepyhead Beds is out in the community at least 5 days a week picking up donated beds. Unfortunately, we are a small organization, so it sometimes takes us a few weeks to get into contact with you and schedule your pickup. If you have questions or specific needs around your pickup, please contact Michael Vennard at email@example.com. Michael is our program manager and will be happy to work with you to resolve any issues.
Are You Bonded & Insured?
No, Sleepyhead Beds employees and volunteers are not bonded and insured as commercial movers.
Will You Carry the Bed from my Basement/Second Floor/Apartment?
Sleepyhead Beds will pick up your bed from the first floor of your house, garage, or exterior location. If you live in an apartment, we will pick up your bed if there is an elevator which accommodates the bed size.
Can You Waive the Donation Pickup Fee?
On average, it costs $60 per child for us to locate, pickup, sanitize, and redistribute a bed and bedding. Sleepyhead Beds is a non-profit organization, funded entirely by pick up fees and donations from the community. We receive no state or federal funding. As a result, we are unable to waive our $30 pickup fee.
Do You Have Bed Frames/Furniture?
Sleepyhead Beds provides the box spring and mattress. We also provide a new pillow and bedding if we have it available. We DO NOT provide cribs, bed frames or other bedroom furniture.
Do You Deliver?
Sleepyhead Beds does not have the capacity to deliver beds. Clients must be able to provide transportation at the time of bed pick up .
I’m an Adult. Can I Get a Bed from Sleepyhead Beds?
Sleepyhead Beds mission is tied to meeting the needs of children (and their immediate families) in the community. We are unable to help you if you are a single adult in need of a bed.
Are Your Beds New?
Our beds are not typically new, although we do get donations from mattress retailers who are trying to find a home for returned and slightly damaged items. Most of our beds come from the community, either through individual donations or via hotels, college dorms, and others who are replacing mattresses. Although the beds are not new, we only redistribute gently used beds, those with relatively little (if any) staining and no tears.
How Are the Beds Sanitized?
We use a product called Steri -Fab. The nonresidual spray deodorizes as it disinfects and is the only EPA registered disinfectant and insecticide in one product. Beds coming into the warehouse are immediately sprayed and set out to dry. Once dry, they are stacked for re-distribution.
Why Can’t I Schedule a Specific Pick-up Time? Why is there a 4-hour window?
When we schedule bed pickups, we are working in a specific area of the city. We can give you a window of time to expect us but cannot guarantee a specific pick up time. Nor are we able to contact you as we are on our way.
Can I Drop Off a Donated Bed/Bedding?
Yes. We are not at the warehouse during the day, so drop offs must be scheduled by appointment. To schedule an appointment, please contact Michael Vennard at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you have bedding to drop off, we do have a container located just outside our front door.
Can I Pay Cash at the Time of Pickup?
We are no longer accepting cash for bed pickups. We’d prefer that you pay via Paypal. If you have issues with on-line payments, we will accept a check.
How Can I Get on Your List if I Don’t Have a Computer?
Because we are a very small organization, we communicate almost exclusively through email. To be added to our list, you must apply on-line at our website. We do not take calls or registrations over the phone. If you are working with a social services agency, school, or church, please have the social worker submit your information. If you need access to a computer to submit your application, please visit a local library. They have computers which can be used during their open hours.
